I am about 1/2 way through the biography - sometimes it is hard to keep a track of all the guys that he played with on the west coast. So many names get dropped in the biography that it is hard to keep a track of who's who.Dexter had this way of playing in a quartet, where it feels that he is almost always behind in rhythm - the attitude seems to be 'wait for me fellas, you are playing way too fast for me' - but that is his style, and he is never really far behind - he is purposefully behind his rhythm section.Steeplechase is a much under-appreciated label in my opinion. A lot of their recordings are from European jazz clubs recorded live. If anyone wants that 'I am in-the-jazz-club' feel, Steeplechase records are really good.Another under-appreciated label is Pablo.
Dexter Gordon Copenhagen
All Pablo records (Dex never recorded with them), have lively music well recorded, very often from various jazz festivals. You can get a NM Pablo LP for $8.99 any time.
